Reciprocal Teaching: An Instructional Strategy
In John Hattie's meta analysis of factors related to student achievement, Reciprocal teaching has an effect size of .74. Anything over .4 represents a year's growth in a year's time. This is certainly worthy of some attention!!
What is is reciprocal teaching? In this instructional model, groups of 4 students run structured discussions around a text using the fabulous four strategies of predicting, clarifying, questioning, and summarizing. Teachers teach the strategies and gradually release responsibility of facilitating to the groups. You can use any type of text which makes this very versatile across the curriculum. Once students learn the routines, this can be a very robust addition to the ELA curriculum a couple times a week.
