Spelling/Word Study
Have a Go: This simple strategy for spelling is great. Students write their first attempt of a word in the first column or the teacher can write in a word that was misspelled in the writing. Then the student tries again in the second column.. The correct spelling goes in the third column. The student rewrites the correct spelling in last column. This is a great tool for teachers because you can see the different attempts and see what strategies the child is using. If the child gets it correct, I just put a check mark next to it, and the student recopies that spelling in the last column. You can give clues in between attempts. I save these to document growth,
The Fry list is a list of most frequently used words in English text. It is important to be able to read and spell these words. By end of third we expect mastery of the first 300. Practicing these words in groups of about 10 is simple and easy to do at home. Keep in miind that reading these words is usually ahead of being able to spell them, and your child will most lkely be at different places for reading and spelling.
