Conferencing during Independent Reading
THE READING CONFERENCE
WHAT? : Short interactions with students where the teacher can assess progress toward a goal using the student's self selected text. You teach one strategy that will help that student . You are teaching the reader not the reading, so you do not have to have read the book. These conversations build connections with students and help the teacher individualize learning for that student.
WHEN ? : You can work conferencing in at almost any time during the day. Plan on 3-4 minutes. First thing in the morning when kids are coming in is a great time to meet with a few students. During your Daily 5 time in between small groups is a good time. During independent work time, you an get to a few students.
WHY? You can target the needs of each student and track their progress toward a goal. You build connections with your students when you have these conversations and you become much more in tune with the way they are developing as a reader. Students get immediate feedback from the teacher on their strategy use making it much more likely to stick.
